Mother Tongue

Today, The class read Mother Tongue by Amy Tan. She spoke about her troubles with her mothers English. Although it was common for her to understand; she told us how others couldn't understand her mother, and the problems, and dilemmas that caused. Tan often had to handle things for her mom because of her mother's English. It illustrated the way people treated her mother due to the way she spoke. Once Tan’s mother was at the doctors' office for her CAT scan but because of her English, the doctor's office wouldn't resolve her problem. Tan’s mother said she wouldn't leave until they called her daughter. After her daughter spoke to the office the problem was resolved, and her mother received the apology she deserved. I loved today's story because of its reflections on the many types of English’s there are and the author's life. I naturally don't like reading, but this years stories interest me a lot.
